Governance 101: Mastering Terra On-Chain Voting
Governance
Why Your Vote Matters
Terra is a decentralized, community-owned network. Unlike traditional companies where a board of directors makes decisions, LUNA stakers decide the future of the blockchain.
Every LUNA you stake grants you voting power. If you don't vote, your validator votes on your behalf. However, your vote always overrides your validator's vote. This is the ultimate check and balance.
Proposal Types
- Text Proposals: General signaling of intent or community sentiment. No code changes.
- Software Upgrade: Changes the chain's binary (e.g., v2.10 upgrade).
- Community Pool Spend: Requests funds from the community pool for projects or grants.
- Parameter Change: Tweaks network parameters (e.g., slashing window, inflation rate).
How to Vote (Step-by-Step)
Option A: Station Wallet (Official)
- Open Station Wallet (Desktop or Mobile).
- Navigate to the Governance tab.
- Filter by 'Voting Period'.
- Read the description and discussion on Terra Agora.
- Cast your vote.
Option B: Keplr Wallet
- Open the Keplr Dashboard.
- Select 'Terra' chain from the sidebar.
- Click on the 'Governance' tab.
- Select an active proposal and click 'Vote'.
Voting Options Explained
- Yes: You approve the proposal.
- No: You disapprove. The proposal fails if 'No' + 'NoWithVeto' > 50% (excluding Abstain).
- NoWithVeto: You strongly disapprove (spam, malicious, or harmful). If > 33.4% veto, the proposer's deposit is burned.
- Abstain: You accept the quorum's decision but want to contribute to turnout. This helps proposals reach the required participation threshold without taking a side.
Pro Tip: Always check the validator's vote first. If you disagree with LUNAStaker's stance, vote yourself to override us! We encourage active participation.
